Currency
The Currency used in Surinam is the Surinam dollar (SRD). In the process of changing from Surinam Guilder to Surinam Dollar, an exchange rate of 1:1000 has been used. This means that 1000 Surinam Guilder equals 1 Surinam Dollar. The SRD is, like the SRG, not related to any other currency, like the US Dollar.
Local newspapers publish the exchange rates of the most commonly used currencies on a daily bases. The use of credit cards is not overall accepted. American Express, Visa en Master Card however are accepted by most hotels and travel agencies. Also US dollars, Euros and other commonly used currencies pose no problem. They can be exchanged at local cambio’s (exchange office) or banks.
