Flag
De current Flag of Surinam dates back to the days of independence in1975.
The Flag has the shape of a rectangle. It consists of five horizontal
stripes and a five-pointed star. The horizontal stripes are colorized
( from top to bottom) green, white, red, white and green in the proportion
of 2 to 1 to 4. The star in the middle of the flag has a yellow colour.
One pointed end of the star faces upwards and two are facing down.
Symbolism
The colour green symbolizes hope and fertility of Surinam soil. The white
stripes represent peace and justice, whereas the red stripe represents
renewal, love and progress. The yellow colour in the star symbolizes a
promising and golden future for Surinam. Each of the five points of the
star represents one of the major ethnic communities in Surinam: The Creole,
the Asian Indians ( Hindu ), the Chinese, the Native Americans and the
Europeans.

Coat of Arms
The coat of arms of Surinam consists of two Native Americans holding a
heraldic shield. The shield shows a number of images. On the left hand
side a sailing ship representing the history of Surinam. The palm on the
right hand side symbolizes the present, but also justice. In the middle
of the heraldic shield there is a diamond representing the heart. In the
middle of the diamond a star is drawn symbolizing the areas where the
people from Surinam originate from.
At the bottom of the coat of arms is the motto Justitia Pietas Fides.
This means Justice, Faith, Loyalty .
